Baby is still in the hospital. He had a birth injury which resulted in blood collecting under his scalp and now has jaundice- and his bilirubin levels are rising.

My specialist is affiliated with the large NY hospital where he was born and I had my appointment yesterday. I assumed the baby was discharged because I had not heard otherwise. My doctor was running late and I was cranky. I stopped for a hot dog, turned around and saw my sister in law standing ten feet away. (this is quite unbelievable in New York City)

She was discharged Sunday and spent the night in the waiting room so she could nurse on demand. They were living in a nearby hotel room and my brother had just gone home for a change of clothes. She was sad, confused and looked really lost.

Divine intervention that I stopped for that hot dog. She really needed me!

Please send up a prayer for normal levels so he can go home!

Hope he'll be well soon to finally go home. Best wishes to your sister in law too.

Prayers going up right now. I nursed all 3 of our children, and it's pretty common for breast fed babies to get jaundiced-breast milk contains more protien than formula. We were able to treat my babies jaundice with direct sunlight, but otherwise, I'm sure they'll just put him under billirubin lights at the hospital. Babies look so funny with those little goggle things to protect their eyes while they're under the light. I'm sure your SIL is feeling overwhelmed after her difficult delivery and now this, but I'm sure she'll be home, rocking her baby soon. Let her know that people are thing about her and keeping her in their prayers.

My son had jaundice also and was carrot orange when he went home. He was delivered with forceps and had a fractured collar bone so the bilirubin was from healing. I took him for daily walks and put him in front of our living room windows for hours and nursed him till he could not stand it. He is fine. I know she is stressed from trying to nurse an infant in the NICU and being on call. I know he will be fine but she is just beginning her journey and is questioning every step... was it because he was induced, am I breastfeeding right, is it because he was delivered early.

    I pray for her also.

I went through this same thing when DD was born. Only...she got to come home. We had a portable light belt that went around her tiny body. It helped and I breastfed her too. She recovered...but I know how stressful it can be. I was only allowed to hold her for a short periods of time. Then she had to go back under the lights. I understand how difficult this could be! I thank God DD didn't have to go to NICU.

They're on my prayer list. I imagine that's really scary to have a child in the NICU for any reason- even if you know they'll be OK.
